DATING OF (PRE) HISTORICAL WOOD AS SERVICE

Dendrochronological dating of historical wood samples or living trees is offered as a service.   Requirements for samples: To date samples with the help of dendrochronology it is essential to measure all existing annual rings, i.e. a sample perpendicular to the axis of the stem is needed. That’s possible either by coring or by cutting a disk (2 cm height is sufficient). Measuring of charred specimen is also possible. The essential characteristic of a sample is not the diameter but the number of annual rings. The absolute minimum to work with is 30 tree rings. Arts and crafts can be measured non-destructively by reflected light microscope. A wane (the occurrence of bark on the sample, i.e. the last grown ring) is needed to date the year of felling. Additionally the identification of Middle-European wood species is offered (also for wood charcoal).   Costs: Sampling: depending on travelling costs Dating: 35,- Euro per sample (price can differ with very small or very large number of samples and samples which are difficult to process)   Contact: Dr. Michael Grabner 1-47654-4268 michael.grabner(at)boku.ac.at
