Decarb Alt Erlaa
Decarb Alt Erlaa
In the Decarb Alt Erlaa project, possibilities are being developed to transform the Alt Erlaa residential park planned by Harry Glück in the 1970s, one of the largest residential complexes in Austria and a leading project in social housing with supra-regional appeal, into a climate-neutral neighbourhood. With its unusual dimensions of around 3,200 flats on a gross floor area of 340,000 square metres, its architectural-historical and socio-economic significance and its energy-intensive building standard from the 1970s and 1980s, the residential complex offers very promising but also very challenging conditions for the development into a climate-neutral neighbourhood.
The project focuses on the thermal refurbishment of the building envelope and the decarbonisation of the heating system using heat pump solutions (150 km of geothermal probes). The project is complemented by a comprehensive risk analysis and intensive social science support in order to minimise any risks that may arise in the course of the refurbishment of a residential property with around 3,200 residential units in an inhabited state. If the outcome of the exploratory study is positive, the plan is to implement the measures developed, i.e. to carry out the transformation to a climate-neutral neighbourhood and to provide further scientific support in a three-year cooperative R&D project.
The project is being carried out together with the Institute of Building Research & Innovation, Gemeinnützige Siedlungs- und Bauaktiengesellschaft (GESIBA) and wohnbund:consult. Decarb Alt Erlaa is funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) as part of the Technologien und Innovationen für die Klimaneutrale Stadt 2023 call.
