What is an equivalence (list) and where can I find it?

If a course is no longer offered but an equivalent course has been defined in the equivalence list, the following applies:

if one of these two courses is completed, the other is automatically considered to have been completed as well. For expiring study plans, some courses, including compulsory courses, will no longer be offered from winter semester 2025 onwards. In order to still be able to complete these, the new, equivalent course must be taken.

If a course has already been completed in the old curriculum and an active change to a new study plan has taken place, the new, equivalent course will be considered completed as of October 1, 2025.

Please note that the course number may change if the responsible organizational unit changes—however, this only affects the first 4 letters; the number combination behind them remains the same and can be used for searching in BOKUonline.

Each study plan has its own list of equivalent courses, known as the equivalence list. You can find this in BOKUonline after logging in to “My Studies” under “My Documents”:

Frequently asked questions about the new modular curriculum

Why do my completed exams not appear after switching to the new curriculum, even though they are included in the equivalence list?

Since the new study plans will not come into effect until the start of the winter semester on October 1, 2025, equivalent credits can only be calculated from this date onwards. After that, all equivalent credits should also appear in “My Studies.” No action is required on your part.

All credits that are included in both the previous and new curriculums are already displayed.

I cannot register for a course because the prerequisites are shown as not being met, even though I actually fulfill the exam requirements.

In most cases, equivalence has not yet been calculated; this will happen from October 1, 2025—after which registration should be possible.

If you are unable to register for a course with examination requirements, please contact us, specifying the course number and title. studienservices(at)boku.ac.at

My STEOP is no longer shown as completed after I switched to the new study plan.

When switching to the new curriculum, the STEOP status will also be set accordingly. A STEOP that has already been completed remains completed. If this is not the case, please contact studienservices(at)boku.ac.at

I have already switched to the modular study plan version, but no equivalent courses have yet been recognized for me.

Equivalencies are automatically recognized once a month. After that, the recognized credits should also be assigned in “My Studies” in BOKUonline. If equivalent recognitions or assignments are still missing in “My degree programme” please contact studienservices(at)boku.ac.at .

Can I use an equivalently recognized achievement as a free elective course?

No. An equivalently recognized achievement cannot be used as a free elective course; only the achievement that actually led to the recognition can be used.

Do credits of a recognized English course equivalent to a course I completed in German course count toward my foreign language ECTS credits?

No. Only courses that were actually completed in a language other than German are counted as foreign language ECTS credits.

I have switched to the modular study plan for Forestry (033 225 25U), but my completed elective courses are not assigned in “My  degree programme” in BOKUonline.

Please note that your study plan version includes an elective option: As part of the programme, you must complete elective modules totaling 30 ECTS credits OR a specialization totaling 30 ECTS credits. Only if one specific elective option (specialization 1, specialization 2, specialization 3, no specialization) is selected in “My degree programme” in BOKUonline elective courses can be assigned correctly. If you have any questions or wish to change your elective option, please send an email to studienservices(at)boku.ac.at .
