Bernd Giese

is deputy director of the Institute of Safety and Risk Sciences (ISR) and head of the ISR research field of technology assessment in bio- and nanotechnology. He has many years of laboratory experience in the fields of molecular, cellular and infection biology. Influenced by his work at the Department of Technology Design and Development at the University of Bremen, headed by Arnim von Gleich, Bernd Giese follows an approach that is oriented towards the technological character and paradigms of research and development. In addition to specific, technology-related studies, he is engaged in the further development of methods for prospective technology assessment and for analyzing the vulnerability of potentially affected systems. His work aims to find low-risk development paths for new technologies. The research field's contributions to the design of innovation processes and the governance of technology applications are made on behalf of and in collaboration with federal agencies, ministries, the EU Commission, and OECD working groups. Dr. Giese has led numerous projects at the interface between technology development and impact assessment.
