Dr. Steve Demarais, an expert on white-tailed deer ecology and management, is visiting BOKU! He is the MSU (Mississippi State University) Deer Lab co-director and the Taylor Chair in Applied Big Game Research and Instruction. Take the opportunity to get to know Steve Demarais and his work by listening to his talks.

TALK #1 13:30 – 14:00

“While Males Fight, Females Choose: Male Phenotypic Quality Informs Female Mate Choice,” covers a manipulative experiment evaluating if females prefer males based on antler size, body size, and/or age.


TALK #2 14:45 – 15:15

“Soil, Land Use, and Genetic Potential – Connecting the Dots of Deer Ecology and Management,” summarizes a 10-year effort to quantify cause and effect relationships underlying regional variation in antler and body size of white-tailed deer.


TALK #3 16:00 – 16:30

“Using Large- and Small-Scale Vegetation Management to Recouple Forage Nutrients with Herbivore Nutrient Demands,” reviews our work to understand how fire timing and plant responses can be used to improve forage quality during periods of nutritional limitations.
