How can agroecology help farming households prepare for, withstand and recover from cyclones? Join us on 19 October for the online launch of the BRACE technical report, “Building Resilience through Agroecology for Coastal Emergencies”.
In May 2024, Cyclone Remal struck coastal Bangladesh, flooding homes, destroying crops and displacing thousands of farming households. The BRACE study grew out of conversations with cyclone-affected communities, who described how their agricultural practices shaped their experiences of the disaster. It asked whether participation in an agroecological farming programme strengthened household resilience and, if so, how.
The study found that households participating in the programme performed substantially better before, during and after Cyclone Remal than comparable households outside the programme. These findings highlight agroecology’s potential to strengthen resilience in cyclone-exposed communities.
At this Zoom event, the authors will present their research, and colleagues in Bangladesh will share lessons from the programme. Together, we will discuss what the findings could mean for disaster management policies and practices in Bangladesh and beyond.
