This course is designed to introduce students to the use of virtual and augmented reality in urban planning research. The course firstly gives an overview of state-of-art technologies, novel data types and associated research methodology. It discusses their applicability and suitability in transport research and their advantages and disadvantages relative to traditional data sources. Importantly, the course gives a series of hands-on classes where students pre-process and analyze VR-based data from a real case study using R programming language.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic experience with programming in R language is essential.
An interest in urban planning or travel behavior related issues is welcome.

After completion of the course, the students will be able to:
•Identify state-of-art technologies used in transport research and evaluate their applicability in urban planning research (VR, AR, caves, simulators and potential of joint use with other data types)
•Describe challenges and benefits of VR use in transport research
•Access and merge datasets from different sources
•Perform pre-processing of the data produced with VR (Import, re-coding, merging, wrangling, cleaning, conducting sanity checks, visualisation of data)
•Conduct an inferential analysis of the data
