Lehrinhalt

In this course, the following topics are covered:

- the diversity of microorganisms
- fundamentals of metabolic conversion processes
- the bioavailability, uptake of soluble and insoluble substrates
- the metabolic energy balance of the cell
- biofilms and microbially induced corrosion
- the formation of flocs and cell aggregates
- behaviour of mixed cultures and quorum sensing
- the degradation of xenobiotica
- sustainable technologies for the environment
- the microbiology of selected environmental processes: aerobic/anaerobic treatment, biogas, drinking water purification, composting

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Knowledege at bachelor-level in biochemistry, genetics and microbiology.

Lehrziel

After successful completion of this course, students know and fundamentally understand environmental biotechnological processes, incl. biogas production, drinking water purification, aerobic/anaerobic treatment and composting. The students know about the diversity of microorganisms, the interaction of mixed cultures and understand how their behaviour and metabolic activities (e.g. biofilm formation, corrosion, floc formation) influence biotechnological processes.
The students will be able to analyse and evaluate existing sustainable technologies and will have the capability to develop new techniques based on the fundamental interdisciplinary knowledge.
