Lecture is in English!!
- Basic elements of metabolism (membranes and transport systems, functions of cell compartments, regulation of enzymes, hormonal control, energy).
- Nutrient absorption and digestion (regulation of absorption, hunger/satiety, digestion of carbohydrates, fat, protein).
- Oxidation of nutrients to obtain ATP (principle of glycolysis, citrate cycle, respiratory chain, ß-oxidation, conversion of amino acids, regulation, networking between the metabolic pathways of nutrients).
- Conversion and synthesis of nutrients (glucose/glycogen, pentose phosphate pathway, fat, amino acids, urea formation).
- Coordination of metabolism in the organism as a whole, including consideration of situations of particular metabolic stress.
- Performance physiology (lactation, muscle growth, egg formation).
- Metabolism and homeostasis of minerals, as well as the importance of certain vitamins in metabolism.
- Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)
-
Basic knowledge of animal nutrition, physiology and biochemistry desirable
- Lehrziel

Students are able to:
- Describe the basics of cell structure and assess the importance of membranes in the transport of substances and for the compartmentalization of metabolic pathways;
- Understand the digestion of feed macromolecules into absorbable monomers (monogastric animals, ruminants) and determine their pathway and absorption at the point of use;
- Apply basic knowledge about the oxidation of nutrients for energy production, assess the possibilities for the conversion and build-up of nutrients in the organism, their regulation and nodal points in the metabolism;
- Using knowledge of catabolic and anabolic processes, define the elementary relationships between the metabolic pathways of nutrients at cellular level and also describe the various tasks of metabolically active organs and tissues (primarily liver, muscle, adipose tissue but also kidney and brain) in the metabolic utilization of nutrients. In this way, the reaction of the organism to a defined metabolic situation can be determined;
- Link the metabolism to the performance physiology of farm animals and recognize the connections;
- Describe the importance of minerals and vitamins for the function of the metabolism and compare the interactions;
