In this seminar students are presented with approaches towards current challenges in agriculture and food production systems from different scientific perspectives and should learn to form an interdisciplinary and systemic understanding of the interrelations between agriculture, climate change and sustainability. The seminar is based on the expertise of teachers from varying scientific disciplines and emphasises the need to integrate those different aspects into an interdisciplinary comprehension of the challenges faced by agriculture. In a mix of keynote lectures, literature reviews, discussions, other interactive formats and presentations by the students they learn to work on complex problems. Topics are specific research questions in the field of climate change impacts on agriculture and the transitions towards sustainable agricultural systems in different regions of the world.

Participants can apply interdisciplinary thinking to the specific research question of their master thesis and in general to the problems posed to agriculture and world nutrition by climate change, demographic and social challenges. They understand that sustainable solutions for these problems need to integrate the ecological, economic and societal dimensions surrounding food production systems. They are able to identify the scale at which a challenge originates and manifests (local, regional, global) and can address the suitable scale in their solution approach.
