The content of the lecture is a detailed description of the following topics:
(i) Genome structure of Eukaryotes from low to high repetitiveness (single copy genes, gene families, low-, intermediate- and high-repetitive DNA sequences, including retro-transposons)
(ii) How viral sequences shape the eukaryotic genomes
(iii) Genome wide analyses: the most commonly used molecular techniques and genetic markers for forensic, medical and agricultural purposes.
(iv) Detailed description of Chip-analyses and its use to analyze large amount of genomic data.
(v) Genome wide analysis and next generation sequencing
Please note many lectures are held in an interactive manner, thus it is recommended to physically attend the lecture

-
Upon attendance of the course students
-) have acquired an overview of eukaryotic genomic elements and how they are organized
-) have a detailed knowledge about the importance of various genetic elements in respect to genome stability and variation.
-) are aware of the importance of virus elements in the eukaryotic genome
-) are familiar with state -of-the art methods in genetic analyses (e.g. microsatellite-analysis, FISH, next sequencing generation, Bio-marker),
-) should be able do chose appropriate genetic markers among others to approach specific questions (individuum identification vs. determination of biodiversity, evolution, etc).
-) are familiar with the enormous potential of chip analyses and genome wide analyses in the “postgenomic area”.
