“Es lebe der Zentralfriedhof” (Wolfgang Ambros, 1975)

How can we transform one of the largest cemeteries of the world to address future urban and landscape challenges?

VIENNA CENTRAL CEMETERY was planned in 1863 when the existing communal cemeteries in Vienna proved to be insufficient. On a site of 2.4 square kilometres, the Central Cemetery hosts more than 330.000 graves and 3 million interments. While initially the cemetery was located on the city’s outskirts, through time, it has become part of the Vienna urban landscape. Considering the shift of burial habits and the consequent availability of open space, the studio discussed cross-scale strategies to transform Vienna Central Cemetery and explored the possibilities to integrate other habitats, such as urban recreation and natural and ecological habitats. The course was bilingual (German/English).
