Mapping Densification and Sprawl in Vienna

Mapping of settlement dynamics between 1984 and 2018 in Vienna, Austria. We identified distinct settlement trajectories of densification and sprawl analyzing spatially explicit maps of buildings, population and jobs.

Global National-Level Indicators of Built Structures

In this exercise, the goal was to derive national-level indicators representing characteristics of built structures that influence each nation's per-capita resource demand. Each of these indicators characterizes one specific aspect of built structures that can influence resource use, e.g. built-up area, length of road networks or compactness of settlements (year 2018).

Global mobility infrastructure stocks and flows

Roads and rail-based mobility infrastructures are the basis for mobility services and underpin several Sustainable Development Goals, but also induce material use and greenhouse gas emissions. We present global findings on material stocks for all roads, rail-based infrastructures, incl. tunnels and bridges, and model associated material flows and their embodied emissions for the year 2021. We derive spatially explicit, national-level stock estimates for 180 countries, map them at a resolution of 5 arcminutes, and derive material flows and their embodied emissions at the country-level.

Mapping material stocks in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland

This study presents high-resolution maps of buildings and mobility infrastructure stocks for the United Kingdom (UK) and the Republic of Ireland (IRL) at 10 m, combining satellite-based Earth observations, OpenStreetMaps, and material intensities research. Next to quantifying material stocks, we also investigate the role of population density and settlement patterns in shaping material stock requirements.

High-resolution data and maps of material stock, population, and employment in Austria from 1985 to 2018

Thirty-five years of continuous material stocks, population, and employment maps at 30 m resolution indicate hotspots of building and infrastructural development in Austria. Landsat time series analysis was used along with socio-economic and census data to assess growth in a spatially explicit way.

Gridded population mapping for Germany

This study estimated gridded population at 10 m spatial resolution based on physical settlement parameters such as building area, building height, and building type. Weighing the estimates by volume and residential building type yielded the most accurate results.

Mapping Land Cover Fractions

These data describe land cover as sub-pixel fractions of different surface types, thus increasing the information content of medium-resolution satellite imagery in complex environments. We here mapped three land cover types (imperviousness, woody vegetation, non-woody vegetation) across Austria and Germany at 10m spatial resolution (year: 2018).
