Biochemie

Die Forschungsschwerpunkte des Instituts für Biochemie sind Glykobiologie (Glykananalytik - Stadlmann, Molekulare Glykobiologie - Wilson), Proteinbiochemie (Furtmüller, Hofbauer, Obinger, Traxlmayr) and NanoGlycobiologie (Schäffer).

Projekte der Glykobiologie befassen sich mit der Biosynthese, Struktur und Funktion von Protein‐Glykanen. Von besonderem Interesse sind die Funktionen dieser Zucker, z.B. bei der Embryonalentwicklung, bei Krankheitserregern oder auf therapeutisch angewandten Proteinen.

Projekte der Proteinbiochemie untersuchen Struktur‐Funktionsbeziehungen von Metalloproteinen mit Schwerpunkt Hämenzyme (Peroxidasen, Katalasen, Peroxidasine, Chloritdismutasen). Weitere Themen umfassen Proteindesign und Proteinengineering mit Schwerpunkt Design neuer therapeutischer Antikörper(fragmente) mittels Modular Antibody Engineering.

Drawing from the areas of microbiology and molecular glycobiology the Schäffer Group is developing biological settings to assess structure-function relationships of natural compounds such as microbial glycans and secondary metabolites in contexts that are relevant to human health.

Our mission is to understand how microbes build up their glyco-code and to translate the glyco-language microbes speak - endogenously, in inter-species, cross-kingdom and microbe-host interactions - into new knowledge that enables us to advance targeted intervention approaches.
