WORKSHOP

"MISSION SOIL" – We're going on a mission!

Who knows the most about our soil? Our natural soil – the magical network beneath our feet – is full of secrets. It’s a habitat, a nutrient provider, a water reservoir, and the planet’s silent hero. But what truly lies in this fascinating underground? Find out! Together, we’ll embark on an interactive adventure with exciting stations that will challenge you, let you experiment, and leave you amazed.

Station 1: The Field Soil Science Station – Discover Tools Become a soil researcher*! Test authentic equipment:

  • How heavy is a soil auger?
  • Did you know you can read the history of soil from a single shovelful?
  • Ever used a measuring tape the right way?

Here, you’ll feel the work of soil scientists firsthand and experience how exciting science in action can be.

Station 2: Soil Chemistry and Soil Physics – Decode the Soil Now it gets scientific!

  • Determine the soil’s pH value: Is it acidic, basic, or neutral? This influences what plants can grow there and the soil's health.
  • Feel the structure and texture: Is the soil sandy, loamy, or clayey? Each has its effects on the ability to store water and hold roots.

Station 3: Soil Creatures and Soil Life – Discover the Buzzing World Underground Dare to reach into the digging box? Inside, you’ll find earthworms, woodlice, springtails, and other soil residents. But don’t worry, they’re harmless and essential for the soil’s health!

Station 4: Creative Station – Create Your Own Soil Profile Get creative and craft your own soil profile! Soils are diverse and layered. Work with colors, layers, and materials to represent the various horizons of soil.

Why is this mission important? Our soils are a foundation of life and a shield of protection. They host incredible life forms, regulate our climate, and provide us with food. But they are also vulnerable. Through our mission, you’ll learn what you can do to protect this valuable resource and preserve its stories. Ready for the adventure? Dive into the world of soils and become a soil detective!

Workshop Leaders: Angelika Hromatka, Magdalena Bieber (Institute of Soil Research)

General Information

Participation in the BOKU Girls*day is free of charge. Participants will be accompanied during breaks and while moving between buildings. Small snacks and drinks will be provided during breaks, and a lunch package including a beverage will be available at noon.

A tetanus vaccination is absolutely necessary for girls* on this day, as soil will be handled. Chemicals and tools will be used under supervision. We kindly ask participants to wear comfortable clothing that may get dirty and sturdy footwear (e.g., sports shoes).

During the event, photos and videos of the participating girls* will be taken and used in BOKU media. Please inform us if there are any intolerances or other circumstances we need to be aware of (please contact kostelle@boku.ac.at).

The BOKU has been part of the Stadt Wien Girls*day initiative for many years. Girls*day is an initiative to inspire and provide perspectives during the career orientation phase, especially in fields where the proportion of women tends to be low – such as technical, natural, and engineering sciences.

We extend special thanks to all workshop leaders for their commitment and exciting contributions, particularly to our host Institute for Soil Research. The Vienna Girls*day at the BOKU is a collaboration between the Coordination Office for Equality, Diversity, and Disability, the City of Vienna, BOKU4you, and various BOKU institutes.
