H. GEIDEL and W. HAUFE:
On the application of selection indices in sugar beet
Summary
Starting with the papers of RAATZ (1894) to begin with practicable approximation formulae were derived for the "classical" theory of linear selection indices and special cases were discussed. A data set (GEIDEL 1982) was used to illustrate the derived formulae and the connection with the "Bereinigten Zuckerertrag (BZE)", which is used as the selection criterion, was shown. In a further section it was established that the Raatz value corresponds to an Elston-index, under the assumption that the individual characteristics have equal significance. For the data set used it was possible to calculate the ratio of heritabilities which the Raatz value uses implicitly. Key-words: selection index, sugar beet.
