Salvage wood management

In the field of salvage wood management, there is a lack of mature logistic logistics concepts for the efficient management of (large) dry storage facilities. Therefore, the project ManTra will develop a logistics concept with effective measures and strategies for the operation of a dry storage, taking into account timber quality development and associated timber price, with intensive involvement of forestry practice and timber harvesting and freight companies (truck and rail). A regional focus of the surveys and analyses, which cover Austria as well as neighboring countries with special consideration of Germany, are the provinces of Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Styria, which have been affected by persistent bark beetle damage in recent years. For the development of an innovative damage management with special consideration of dry storage, developments and experiences for wet storage are also included in order to be able to carry out benchmark analyses on the basis of corresponding comparative key figures. This enables the determination of the potential for the establishment of wet or dry storage for salvage timber. The project covers two different strategies for the use of a dry storage facility: on the one hand, the widespread storage of industrial timber and, on the other hand, the little-used storage of saw logs. With the qualitative development of practical salvage wood logistics concepts as well as the potential assessment of wet and dry storage, the ManTra project contributes decisively to an improvement of knowledge management along the entire wood logistics chain, leading to an assurance of wood quality, an increase in efficiency as well as the initiation of innovative developments in forestry.
