The cooperation between BOKU University and SCRIPPS https://scripps.ucsd.edu/ was initiated by the famous Austrian-American oceanologist Walter Munk in the last years of his life, who had a personal relationship with Altaussee. The research activities at the lake cover several fields of research at BOKU, regarding the history of the lake.
In the future, the equipment installed at the lake will be used for a long-term monitoring program that is intended to document the effects of climate change on alpine regions. In addition, a cooperation agreement with SCRIPPS is planned to strengthen the collaboration between the universities.
