On October 25th finally the Gürtel Connection is happening again. The Gürtel Connection is a one-day music festival along Vienna’s Gürtel strip, where numerous clubs and bars unite for a major party-event. What are the best dishes in Austrian cuisine? Many people would probably spontaneously say ‘Wiener Schnitzel’ - and they wouldn't be wrong. But Austria's cuisine has much more to offer! The Wiener Schnitzel is, of course, an absolute must-try. It is traditionally made from veal, but pork is often used, especially in the countryside - it's not only cheaper, but also delicious. Another highlight for meat lovers is roast onion - tender beef in a savoury sauce, topped with crispy fried onions. Spätzle is also a classic. They are popular in many variations, but especially as cheese spaetzle - a real feel-good dish. Austria is also known for its soup culture. A hearty beef or vegetable soup is often served with various garnishes - such as Frittatensuppe (pancakes cut into thin strips) or Griesnockerlsuppe (small, soft semolina dumplings). Mulled wine at the christmas market is pretty expensive, isn't it? Here's a recipe for homemade mulled wine that you can easily take to the next Christmas market in a thermos flask! Ingredients: 1L red wine 3 cinnamon sticks 1 lemon 1 orange 6 cloves 4 tablespoons sugar Heat red wine with spices and juice of lemon and orange for one hour covered, but do not boil. Then let the mulled wine steep for another half hour and strain. If you're too lazy for that, heat a liter of red wine with 4 bags of Glühfix (you get in the supermarket at the tea shelf) and enjoy! _______ Glühwein am Weihnachtsmarkt ist ganz schön teuer, oder? Hier ist ein Rezept für selbstgemachten Glühwein, den ihr einfach in einer Thermosflasche zum nächsten Weihnachtsmarkt mitnehmen könnt! Last weekend, the first christmas markets in Vienna already opened! Although Christmas isn't really in sight yet, the cold weather and the smell of punch and gingerbread are slowly bringing the Christmas spirit closer. Some well-known christmas markets, such as the one in Schönbrunn, are already open - most others open on Friday, 14th November! The biggest and most famous of all is certainly the one at Rathausplatz, but you should definitely also visit the one at Spittelberg in the 7th district! That's why children in Austria have their autumn break this week - and maybe, some of your courses are also taking a break.
