What are the best dishes in Austrian cuisine?
Many people would probably spontaneously say ‘Wiener Schnitzel’ - and they wouldn't be wrong. But Austria's cuisine has much more to offer!
The Wiener Schnitzel is, of course, an absolute must-try. It is traditionally made from veal, but pork is often used, especially in the countryside - it's not only cheaper, but also delicious.
Another highlight for meat lovers is roast onion - tender beef in a savoury sauce, topped with crispy fried onions.
Spätzle is also a classic. They are popular in many variations, but especially as cheese spaetzle - a real feel-good dish.
Austria is also known for its soup culture. A hearty beef or vegetable soup is often served with various garnishes - such as Frittatensuppe (pancakes cut into thin strips) or Griesnockerlsuppe (small, soft semolina dumplings).
