The SEC research activities were always embedded in a science-policy dialogue to enable scientific research obtaining social relevance. This science-policy dialogue includes national and international bodies such as the Austrian ministry of Environment and Statistics Austria, the European Commission and Eurostat, the OECD, and the UN International Resource Panel, where Marina Fischer-Kowalski is a representative in the Scientific Expert Panel since 2007.

These activities resulted in several significant assessment reports with SEC researchers as lead authors, mostly funded by the Austrian Ministry of the Environment:
