This summer school is a joint teaching program by the Euro League for Life Sciences - ELLS Subject Area “Bioeconomy”.

Topics will range from biomass & circular food production, sustainability analysis, bio-technology to ethical aspects. Next to lectures held by experts in their field from ELLS partner universities, you will have the chance to discuss these topics with students from all over the world and participate in several excursions to innovative bioeconomic businesses situated around Vienna.

Course Content

The two-week summer course offers an interdisciplinary introduction to several aspects on the concept of Bioeconomy. The urgent question of how a transformation from a fossil- to a biobased economy could be possible, as well as current problems connected to it, is the core of this summer school.

A combination of lectures and excursions will cover the making of our most essential products - food, materials and energy – and how they can be produced within a bioeconomic system. Topics will include the production of and also problems of agricultural and forest materials, biomass, circular food production, an introduction to sustainability analysis of biobased chains, food technology as well as ethical and socio-economic aspects concerning bioeconomy. Therefore, the whole life-cycle of bio-based materials is covered.

The program includes, next to lectures, lab and field excursions, a five-week e-learning course prior to the attendance in Vienna. Our presenters are partly from BOKU, and partly from ELLS partner universities.
