APPEAR Scholars at BOKU
Birtukan Atinkut Asmare recently finalized her PhD studies with honors. Her research focused on gaining insights into pesticide use practices, exposure of women smallholder farmers to pesticides and their negative impact on their health. She studied this topic with reference to Africa and an empirical focus on Ethiopia. Birtukan tells us about her research and how the APPEAR scholarship is leading to future opportunities.
Thaddeo Tibasiima presented his research at the Geographical Science for Resilient Communities, Ecosystems and Livelihoods under Global Environmental Change (GORILLA) conference in Kampala. His PhD thesis titled “Reassembling land degradation: towards a nature-society-inclusive soil erosion control strategy” shows the need to bridging the mismatch between science, policy and practice in order to ensure effective management of land degradation.
