E-Mail

General information on the subject of email

The central mail server cluster of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences is available to employees and students worldwide for receiving and sending e-mail.

In order to efficiently ensure the indispensable protection against spam, viruses, phishing, and other dangers in the context of email, all BOKU mail traffic is routed through this central mail server, and no other so-called SMTP servers can be set up for mail traffic between BOKU and the outside world.

Limitations

The following limitations apply when sending emails via the outgoing BOKU email servers:

The total size of an email is limited to 50 MB on the server side.

This corresponds to approximately 39 MB on the client side due to recoding. However, sending emails with such large attachments is strongly discouraged:

  • This puts a heavy load on the email servers.
  • The time required to send an email increases dramatically.
  • Most email servers of other providers do not even accept such large attachments!
  • You do not know what kind of internet connection the recipients have when retrieving this email, which may result in costs and a significant time investment for them.

We have summarized much better options for transferring large files on the following service pages: https://short.boku.ac.at/it-dateiaustausch

In addition, please note that outgoing mail ports 25, 465, and 587 from BOKUnet to the Internet are blocked (for exceptions for eduroam).

This means that you can only use the BOKU SMTP server to send your emails with your own email clients within BOKUnet. See also our service page on client configuration.
