Information about BOKU

BOKU is Vienna’s University of Natural Resources and Life Science. Founded in 1872, BOKU is characterized by its holistic approach to problem solving and conducts research on important societal issues and for a sustainable future. Today’s social problems are often characterized by their high complexity, which BOKU addresses by combining ecological, technical and economic subjects. The 11,000 students and 3,000 employees at BOKU have several locations at their disposal. One of the main locations is next to the Türkenschanzpark in the 18th and 19th districts. This is also where the workshop takes place.

Arriving in Vienna

In the spirit of the sharing economy and one of the basic ideas behind it – sustainability – there are ways to get to Vienna that are more sustainable. However, this might not always be feasible.

Arriving by train

  • Vienna is well connected to the European train network. Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) offers direct night trains from several bigger cities across Europe. Night trains usually arrive in Vienna in the morning. For more information please visit: this link
  • Vienna’s major train stations
    • Vienna main station – Wien Hauptbahnhof – is well connected to the local public transport network. It is linked via the U1 metro line as well as various bus, trams and city trains (S-Bahn). The U1 metro line offers an easy and fast connection to the city center.
    • Westbahnhof is the second major train station in Vienna and is often a connection for trains heading west. It is linked to two metro lines (U3 and U6). The U6 also provides a good connection to the workshop at BOKU.

Arriving by air

  • Vienna International Airport (VIE) is located 18 km east outside the city. The airport has very good train connections, so it takes less than half an hour to get to the city.
    • City Airport Train (CAT) provides the fastest connection into the city, arriving at “Wien-Mitte Landstraße” within 16 minutes. A one-way trip costs 11€ and an open return trip costs 19€. For more information please follow: this link
    • The S7 (S-Bahn) is a good alternative. For 4.2€ in about 25 minutes one reaches “Wien-Mitte Landstraße” with further stops at “Praterstern” and “Handelskai” among others. In general, the S7 runs every half hour. When switching means of transportation, don’t forget to buy a ticket for public transportation.
    • In addition, other affordable rail connections are offered by ÖBB.
  • Alternatively, there are bus connections to the city as well as taxis waiting outside the airport.

Arriving by Bus

  • The Vienna International Busterminal (VIB) is the biggest bus terminal in Vienna and offers good connections for national and international routes. Flixbus (click here for further information) connects Vienna with numerous cities across Europe.
