We are delighted to announce that we will once again be offering the workshop “Deaf Culture and its Language; ÖGS Basic Sign Language Course” for employees of BOKU and TU Wien in the coming winter semester 25/26.
Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS) is a complete language with its own structure, grammar, and vocabulary. Like spoken languages, sign languages are not universal, but vary regionally and nationally. They developed naturally and should not be confused with body language, pantomime, or nonverbal communication.
This course is aimed at anyone who would like an introduction to ÖGS and deaf culture. Over four afternoon sessions, you will learn how to improve your interaction and communication with deaf people and discover the potential of sign languages.
In this workshop, you will learn:
- Background knowledge about deaf people, their language, and their culture
- Communication with deaf people
- Consulting strategies
- Deafhood and the deaf community
- Basic course in Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS)
Sign language interpreters will be present for the section on sign language and deaf culture.
Participation in this course will be recorded in the BOKU training pass for continuing education.
