In his PhD project, Tobias investigates the early industrial transition of Vienna through the concept of urban metabolism. The project will be limited to elements of the urban metabolism that also affect the Danube, especially the floodplain area next to the city. It is planned to structure the project around three lines of inquiry affecting the riverscape, namely changes in primary production of the floodplain; the provisioning of the city via the river and later railroad infrastructure; and the disposal of excrements and nutrients via the river that accumulate in the city.
