Fast process control and pulp characterization by NIR and chemometrics

PROJECT ASSIGNED TO: Hajar KHALILIYAN
The application of multivariate data analysis in combination with reference methods is a useful tool in quality control. One of the possible fields of application is the pulp and paper industry. Applications focusing on kappa number or lignin content have been established, but a comprehensive characterization of the polysaccharides in the pulp are rare. A quantitative assay of parameters specific to polysaccharides – degree of polymerization, oxidative damage, crystallinity – could readily replace tedious wet chemical methods.
The pursued approach is based on near-infrared spectroscopy, in combination with chemometrics methods, and is intended to be readily transferred to a production environment.
