Collection of donations in kind

BOKU supports the forwarding of its donations in kind to war victims. In Dänenstraße in the container behind the cab stand donations in kind are collected for war victims in Ukraine. The BOKU Kindergarten and the ÖH take care of the direct forwarding to the war area. Above all, medicines, hygiene articles, sleeping bags and other items are needed.

Hofrat Dipl.-Ing. Friedrich Ruhm deceased

Hofrat Dipl.-Ing. Friedrich Ruhm passed away on February 15, 2022, at the age of 86. Until the end of 2001, he was director of the former Federal Forest Research Institute (FBVA), now the Federal Forest Research Center (BFW).

The idea for the exhibition "Fermenting Futures" came about on the initiative of the Institute of Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, as part of a strategic COMET project within the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (acib). In the process, the internationally renowned artists Anna Dumitriu and Alex May could be won over to investigate the significance of yeast biotechnology from a cultural and aesthetic perspective.

How spruce meets bark beetle

How efficient is the defence mechanism of spruce trees when they are suffering from drought, what attracts bark beetles to stressed trees, and what role do their fungal symbionts play in the infestation? In a basic research project, entomologist Sigrid Netherer and her team succeeded in furnishing the first empirical evidence that drought-stressed spruce trees are particularly attractive to bark beetles.

Despite vaccinations, there is an urgent need for other drugs to treat SARS-CoV-2 infections. Biologicals, for example, could prevent the virus from docking to its receptor. A new international initiative involving the BOKU and the Medical University of Graz is now raising hopes of being able to fight COVID-19 diseases efficiently.

In large cities, where there is a particular need for action in terms of climate protection, measurement systems capable of recording local emissions could provide a rapid answer to the question of the effectiveness and accuracy of climate protection measures. In a joint research project, BOKU, Umweltbundesamt (Environment Agency Austria) and A1 Telekom AG tested a method in urban areas for the first time in Vienna that provides real-time data from which correlations with traffic peaks and heating degree days, for example, can be seen.

Austrian researchers release the "sugar brake" and develop highly effective SARS-CoV-2 receptor mock-up

University of Natural Resources and An interdisciplinary research team with the participation of BOKU has calculated and experimentally determined the influence of sugar structures on the docking of the coronavirus to the receptor protein ACE2. It has been shown that some of these sugar chains of the receptor protein stand in the way of the virus and thus "slow down" its docking, which has far-reaching significance in the fight against the coronavirus.

How we learn smells through experience

New antibody for breast cancer therapy

The research group Rüker/Wozniak-Knopp at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology has developed a novel application of their "Modular Antibody Engineering" and published it in the journal "Life". As a result, another attractive antibody is now available for cancer therapy. Modular Antibody Engineering allows the production of bispecific antibodies that have additional antigen binding sites in the constant part of the antibody molecule.

15-point plan aims to save biodiversity in freshwaters

Press release

Species decline is more drastic in freshwaters than in the sea and on land. Despite this, only a negligible proportion of research funding flows into this area. Researchers from 38 countries and 88 scientific institutions, including BOKU Vienna, have now published a joint research agenda in the journal Ecology Letters. A total of 15 priorities are to close the gaps in order to preserve biodiversity in lakes, rivers and wetlands.
